Creative Confidence Challenge: Your First Card, First Win

Welcome to this month’s Creative Confidence Challenge, Academy members! If you’ve been waiting for the perfect time to jump into card making, this is your moment. This month, we’re focusing on creating your very first card, a project designed to ease you into the world of paper crafting with simple steps and plenty of support.

In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to complete the challenge, from gathering supplies to finishing your card. Along the way, I’ll share tips, video tutorials, and a link to a downloadable workbook that will guide you step-by-step through the process.

What is the First Card, First Win Challenge?

This challenge is all about helping you take that exciting first step in card making. By the end, you’ll have created a beautiful card and gained confidence in the foundational skills needed for future projects. Remember, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s about having fun, trying something new, and celebrating your accomplishment!

What You’ll Need to Get Started

Here’s a quick checklist of the supplies you’ll need:

  • Cardstock (cut to 14.8 x 10.5cm for a standard A6 card base)
  • Adhesive (tape runner, glue stick, or double-sided tape)
  • Scissors or Paper Trimmer
  • A Sentiment Stamp or Die Cut (e.g., “Thank You” or “Happy Birthday”)
  • Ink Pad (for stamping)
  • Embellishments (optional) like rhinestones, adhesive backed gems, or ribbon
  • Bone Folder (for scoring and folding the card base)

Gather these supplies, and you’ll be ready to create your first card!

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Your First Card

The process is simple, and with each step, you’ll see your card come together. If you’d like a detailed walkthrough, I’ve prepared a workbook that includes everything you need to know, along with space to reflect on your experience.

1. Create Your Card Base

Use a paper trimmer or scissors to cut your cardstock down to 21 x 14.8cm, then fold it in half to make a standard A6 card base. I’ve also prepared a quick video tutorial on this if you’d like to see the process in action.

2. Add a Focal Point

Choose a simple focal point for your card—this could be a stamped image, a piece of patterned paper, or a decorative die cut. Attach it to your card base with adhesive, and make sure it’s centered.

3. Stamp or Add Your Sentiment

Pick a sentiment that matches your occasion, and stamp it directly onto the card. For a clean impression, press down firmly and evenly. If you’re new to stamping, check out my Basic Stamping Techniques Tutorial for a few tips to get started.

4. Add Embellishments (Optional)

If you’d like, add a few embellishments to personalize your card. A little sparkle or texture can go a long way in making your card feel unique!

Tips for Success

  • Start Simple: Keep your first card design straightforward. It’s more important to finish than to create something overly complex.
  • Follow Along with the Workbook: The workbook includes space to jot down notes and reflect on the process, which will help reinforce what you’re learning.
  • Embrace Imperfections: This challenge is all about building confidence, so don’t stress if your card isn’t “perfect.” Each step is a chance to learn and grow!

Share Your First Card!

I’d love to see what you create! After you finish your card, snap a photo and share it in the community. Use the hashtag #FirstCardWin so we can all celebrate this exciting first step together.
